The Huawei Mate X7 marks Huawei’s next leap in the evolution of foldables, where cutting edge performance meets a sleeker, more refined design, all backed by a more polished ecosystem. Building on the foundation of the Mate X6, it introduces a thinner, more elegant form factor, enhanced dual displays that are brighter and more immersive, and meaningful upgrades in durability and camera technology. Indefinitely positioning it as a true flagship without compromise.

Adding on to the impressive camera setup found on the Pura 80 series offerings from last year, Huawei continues to double down on its imaging prowess, and the Mate X7 is no exception. Leading the setup is a large 1/1.26″ RYYB main sensor with variable aperture for greater control and light capture. It’s complemented by a 50MP telephoto module that doubles as a telemacro shooter, offering a native 3.5x optical reach and extending up to 10x hybrid zoom. Rounding things out is a high resolution 40MP ultra wide camera, ensuring versatility across every shooting scenario.
In this review, let’s start it off with a walk around of its specifications.

Packaging Content
Huawei had sent us the 512GB 16GB, black variant, which other colored variants are available(Brocade White, Nebula Red). The device comes in a very modest offering. You get the device, color matched casing, paper works, USB C to USB C cable and 66W power brick that has a USB A and USB C input. This is very typical of Huawei, generously providing what your moneys worth. A huge appraisal is needed for Huawei when it comes to this, as more often than not, a number of big gun manufacturers tend to provide almost next to nothing in their boxes.
Design
While the overall silhouette of the Huawei Mate X7 stays familiar, Huawei has clearly refined every detail, making it tougher, more premium, and undeniably more polished than before.
Up front, the cover display is now protected by Kunlun Glass 2, while the international variant pairs it with a vegan leather finish in striking red or classic black. The ultra slim, rounded aluminum frame adds to the device’s premium feel, echoing the elegance of its predecessor while pushing it a step further.
Durability also sees a significant upgrade. The Mate X7 now carries IP58 and IP59 ratings, offering resistance not just to water, but also dust and pressurized water jets, meaning well beyond the previous generation. Combined with Kunlun Glass 2 and a reinforced 3 layer composite structure for the foldable panel, it’s built to better withstand everyday wear and accidental drops.
Huawei also introduces a refreshed camera module design, dubbed the “Time Space Portal”. A more sophisticated evolution of its signature circular housing that adds a distinctive visual identity to the device.
Unfold it, and you’re greeted by a slightly larger 8 inch LTPO OLED display, complete with a discreet punch hole 8MP front camera tucked to the side. At just 4.5mm thin when open, it’s impressively sleek. Fold it back, and the 6.49 inch outer LTPO OLED display mirrors that flagship experience with a sharp 412ppi resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, ultra thin bezels, and subtle quad curved edges, encompassing all within a slim 9.5mm profile.
Measuring just 156.8 x 144.2 x 4.5 mm and weighing 236g, the Mate X7 is slightly slimmer and lighter than its predecessor as there are subtle changes on paper, but ones that contribute to a noticeably more refined in hand feel.
In its folded form, it feels every bit like a conventional flagship smartphone, well balanced, solid, and comfortable to hold. The vegan leather back not only elevates the premium appeal but also adds a reassuring level of grip for everyday use.
Unfold it, and the Mate X7 transforms into a true tablet like experience, complete with enhanced multitasking capabilities. Despite its expansive form, it remains impressively thin and lightweight, with the textured leather ensuring it never feels slippery. Whether you’re working across multiple apps, gaming, or consuming content, the experience feels fluid, immersive, and genuinely enjoyable.

User Interface
EMUI 15 represents Huawei’s latest take on its smartphone software experience, bringing a refreshed layer of polish without straying too far from what users are already familiar with. This iteration introduces improved lock screen customization, smoother multitasking, along with new gestures and expressive emoji additions that enhance everyday interactions.
Built on Android 12, EMUI 15 continues to support APK installations through platforms like Huawei’s AppGallery and third party sources such as APKPure. For those who still rely on Google services, solutions like GBox remain a workable option.
Visually and functionally, the interface retains its signature look, with subtle refinements rather than a complete overhaul. Features like large folders and “cards” (Huawei’s take on widgets) remain, offering quick access to key app functions directly from the home screen.
The Mate X7 also carries forward familiar features like air gestures and smart sensing, adding another layer of convenience for hands free interactions.
All things considered, EMUI 15 delivers a stable and highly customizable experience. While it may not offer the full breadth of native Google integration found on conventional Android devices, it remains a capable and flexible system for users willing to adapt.
Battery Life
With the Mate X7, Huawei once again doubles down on its camera first philosophy, introducing meaningful upgrades to both the main and telephoto systems over its predecessor.
This generation sees the 50MP primary camera equipped with a new, larger sensor while retaining its versatile variable aperture. The telephoto module also gets a notable refresh, now featuring a 50MP sensor paired with a 3.5x optical zoom lens and a wider f/2.2 aperture. Meanwhile, the 40MP ultra wide camera with autofocus and the dual 8MP selfie shooters remain unchanged, continuing to deliver a consistent imaging setup across the board.
At the heart of the system is a sizable 1/1.28″ main sensor, which Huawei claims delivers up to a 100% improvement in dynamic range compared to the Mate X6. It works alongside a variable aperture lens ranging from f/1.5 to f/4.0, offering greater flexibility across different lighting conditions. (It’s worth noting that a China exclusive variant uses a smaller sensor, though that’s not the unit in focus here.)
The telephoto camera, while stepping down slightly to 3.5x optical zoom from last year’s 4x, compensates with a larger aperture and what appears to be an upgraded RYYB sensor, resulting in better light capture and improved versatility, especially in lower light scenarios.
Powering the imaging experience further are Huawei’s second generation LOFIC CMOS sensor and upgraded Spectrum sensor, enabling support for Ultra HDR video recording and pushing the Mate X7 closer to a truly flagship level camera experience.
The Huawei Mate X7 delivers a well rounded video experience, with all rear cameras capable of shooting up to 4K at 60fps, paired with always on stabilization that keeps footage consistently smooth and usable. Even the 8MP front cameras impress, supporting 4K recording at 30fps, an uncommon but welcome capability at this resolution.
AI Composition

Beyond hardware, Huawei enhances the shooting experience with AI driven features like Huawei AI Composition. This intelligent system works in real time to guide framing, suggest better angles, adjust zoom, and fine tune composition, indefinitely helping users capture more balanced, professional looking shots without needing advanced photography skills. This is truly the biggest gamechanger for mobile phone cameras today. Watch this video here to understand how AI Composition works.

Verdict
The Huawei Mate X7 made its global debut with a price tag hovering around the MYR8688, firmly placing it in ultra premium territory. But for that price, Huawei delivers a foldable experience that feels every bit as refined as its positioning suggests.
And while the device still carries some ecosystem limitations, the Mate X7 stands out as a foldable that prioritizes user experience just as much as innovation, backed by impressive hardware and a strong emphasis on camera performance. As a matter of fact, if you were to get the device today, it has tremendous discounts and offerings which includes a bundle of the Huawei Matepad 11.5 and its keyboard for a seriously attractive price of MYR6688.
The camera system is easily one of the Mate X7’s standout features. Its primary camera consistently delivers excellent photos and video quality, with noticeably improved low light performance over the previous Mate X6. That said, there’s still slight room for refinement, particularly with white balance consistency, while the telephoto camera could benefit from further optimization in darker shooting environments.
